When you are ready to start coming up with goals, begin by identifying the categories of your life that you most want to improve.
Some categories that you may want to reflect upon include personal growth, health, relationships, career, academics, finances and/or spiritual growth.
Once you have identified the category you most want to improve upon, ask yourself these questions to come up with precise goals: What do I really want? Why is it important to me to achieve? What has prevented me from achieving this? How will I get it? How will I know it worked? What can I do more/less of? What do I want to continue?
Instead of thinking “what if I fail”, think about what you can achieve through by accomplishing your goals. Next, identify any barriers that may set you back from your goals or stop you from achieving them all together. Prioritize your goals as you adjust your plans.
Another way to ensure your success is to establish accountability in making progress towards achieving your goals. You can do this with an accountability partner—someone who shares their progress on their goals and checks in on yours.
It is also important to make sure that your goals are SMART, meaning they are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. If your goals do not align with these criteria, they may be too difficult to achieve within a year.
Habits are an essential part of working towards a long term goal. You can begin forming habits by setting reminders to yourself to perform a specific action. Eventually, after performing this action enough times, you will begin to develop a routine that helps you to achieve your goal.
The three steps of forming a habit include:
1. The cue - the behavior that starts the process
2. The routine - the action you take
3. The reward - the result of performing the action
Make sure to include all three of these steps in your fitness routine, especially as you are starting out or trying something new, in order to form a new habit.
Remember that your fitness journey is fluid. It is okay to take breaks and take days off in which you do not work towards your goals.
Focus on your health as a long term journey instead of the reward at the end of the path.
No matter how old you are or what state your health is in, it is never too late to start working towards a healthier, happier you.
