How to Workout While Traveling
It can be difficult to stick to your fitness routine if you are frequently traveling for work or traveling for pleasure for an extended period of time. But not to worry, we have come up with several fitness tips for frequent flyers. Keep reading to learn easy ways to stay fit while on the go!
Pack for exercise
Before you pack for your trip, research the fitness facilities at your hotel or nearby where you are staying so you can pack accordingly to what type of workout you can engage in while traveling.
Make sure to pack workout essentials such as:
- Athletic shoes
- Exercise clothing
- Swimsuit
- Jump-rope
- Resistance bands
- Headphones
- Yoga mat
- Smartphone / tablet
Stay active in transit
No matter how you might be traveling, whether that be by car, train or plane, you are most likely going to be sitting for an extended period of time.
To fit some physical activity into your travel days, try taking a walk through the airport terminal rather than sitting at the gate. If traveling by train, go for a walk through the train cars occasionally. If you are driving a long distance, get out and stretch from time to time.
If you are traveling by airplane and you know you will have a long layover at an airport, you can even check to see if the airport has a gym. If so, you can pack your carry-on bag with gym clothes for a light workout.
Remember that available gym equipment will vary from location to location and some gym usage fees may apply.
Make fitness a priority
Upon arrival to your destination, follow through with your commitment and try to be active right away, even if that just means taking a walk to check out your surroundings.
If that's not possible with your schedule, you can schedule a later time to get your heart rate up. Just be sure to prioritize your fitness sessions as much as you do your meetings!
Here are some easy ways to stay active while traveling:
- Go for a long walk by exploring your destination on foot
- Use the fitness facilities at your hotel or nearby gym
- Bring a jump rope and get skipping
- Take advantage of your own body weight: you can always do pushups, squats, planks, jumping jacks or lunges no matter your location
- Use resistance bands
- Attend an online fitness class
- Go swimming
Listen to your body
While traveling can be a lot of fun, it can also be exhausting and can take a significant toll on your body. Be sure to listen to what you body needs while traveling to make sure you don't over do your workouts.
For example, if you are feeling drowsy or stiff while traveling, forgo the workout and try out some light yoga or stretching to help you relax. You know best what your body needs, so don't be afraid to listen to it!
