Raise your hand if you set a New Year's resolution to workout more! The challenge you may be facing is that you want to workout more, but you don't really know what to or where to start. It's common to start a workout program and not enjoy the exercise you are doing, and that's okay; it's all about trial and error.
There seems to be new styles of exercise that make certain workouts "trendy." In 2012, exercise style, Zumba, made a rise with over 15 million people participating in weekly classes (CNBC, 2018). In addition, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) seemed to make for a popular cardio fitness trend starting in the 2020's right around the time of COVID-19.
Since we are still at the beginning of the year, I can reassure you that it is not too late to find the exercise that you love and can stick to all year! This 2023 there seems to be a handful of unique fitness trends to keep an eye out for to incorporate into your workout grind! Keep reading to learn new ways to enjoy exercise!
Top Fitness Trends for 2023
1. Wearable Technology
So, fitness trackers have been around for some years now... They are useful for tracking steps, heart rate, calories, sit up time, etc., but what is really making for a new trend is eye glasses, socks, and small devices all created to do the same thing as an Apple watch, but a little bit more tech advanced.
Sensoria Smart Socks were designed to monitor your heart rate, detect cadence, foot landing and impact forces.
Looking to correct your posture? There is a wearable device for that! Lumo Lift was created to be almost as a posture "coach," detecting posture curvature and notifying you when it is time to correct your posture.
2. Virtual Reality
Virtual reality workouts, also known as "vrworkouts," have been making an appearance this 2023. In virtual reality workouts, you are wearing a headset, holding two controllers, and are "placed" in an exotic land through the scope of the headset. Whether you are kickboxing in Thailand or doing yoga in Iceland, vrworkouts are a great way to get in shape, strengthen your muscles, and burn some calories!
3. At-home workouts
With everyone forced to stay at home due to Covid-19, at-home workouts became a popular fitness trend in 2020. However, there are many people still using at-home workouts to stay active and burn some extra calories while working from home. At home workouts are great for those who are still working remotely, don't love the idea of spending money on a gym membership, or for those who just love the comfort of their own living room!
Whether you are joining a live fitness class on TV or have a home gym to yourself, at-home workouts require minimal equipment and are a great way to stay active (remotely)!
4. Standing Core Workouts
If you've been scrolling through TikTik or IG, you may have noticed these trending core workouts. With over 24 million views, the hashtag #standingabs has been making an appearance this 2023 and we are here for it! There really isn't any negatives to building a strong core, so the more exercises given to strengthen up those abdominal muscles, the better.
This trend emphasizes training deeper muscles of the abdomen, lower trunk, and even your back muscles. Stability balls, bosu balls, foam rollers, and kettlebells are all great equipment for standing core exercises. Standing core workouts are also suggested to refrain from lower back pain and are "functional," meaning they work correspondingly with your natural body movements. Whether you're carrying in a load of groceries or deep cleaning your cabinets, standing core exercises may benefit you! Below are a few examples of weighted and body weight standing core exercises to add to your routine!
5. Mobility Training
Mobility training is another popular workout trend to be seen this year. A lot like core training, mobility training is another functional workout used to strengthen and improve flexibility and balance.
Physical therapist Jess Chang, says "Due to the pandemic, work from home culture has also resulted in non-ergonomic setups that aren’t ideal for our bodies." This is where mobility training comes into action!
Mobility training is a lot like yoga; it emphasizes care for your joints and initiates blood flow that comes from movement.
There are many at-home mobility training workouts that can be searched on YouTubeto get you started! Remember that mobility training is just like any other training; it's important to start small and work your way up for optimal progress and results!
